He has graduated in 1989 from Faculty of Information, Cairo University and he started to publish his own short stories since 1987 in Egyptian and Arab newspapers and magazines. Elkersh has two series of stories: Ports for Departure (1993) and Eternity Tree (1998). He has also published five novels: Soldiers’ Talk (1996), The Ship’s Door (2002), and Auserre Trilogy published by Al Dar Al Masriah Al Lubnaniah, which included Day Begin (2005) that won the 2011 al-Tayeb Saleh First Prize for creative writing, Auserre’s Night (2008), Single Tattoo (2011). He has also published three books / testimonies on what happened in Egypt since the dawn of the revolution of January 25, 2011: The Revolution now .. Diary of Tahrir Square), Facebook Days : Realistic Issues in a Virtual World), First Year Of Brotherhood .. Facts And Testimony On 369 Days Prior To The Disappearance Of The Organization. His book (Seven Heavens: Trips to Algeria, Iraq, India, Morocco, the Netherlands and Egypt) received Ibn Battuta Award for Contemporary Journey (2008-2009) of the Arab Center for the Geographical Literature. Elkersh has published articles, studies and coverage of film festivals in several magazines like Literature and Criticism, The Seventh Art, Lines, and Points of View, The Arts. In 2005, was published an Emirati limited edition of his book The Concept of Identity in the Arab Cinema. His newest In Praise of Movies: Festivals, Cities and People adored by Cinema will soon hit the bookstands. Elkersh is currently holding the position of Chief Editor of Al-Helal Magazine.
